Joan Caplan

Joan Caplan

Curious about the services at FUUSN, Joan Caplan came to a service during the summer of  2014.  She happened to sit next to someone who said to her, after the first hymn, “You should be in the choir!  And that’s Anne Watson Born, up front, – she’s the choir director.  You go talk to her after the service.”  She did that and began attending rehearsals and Sunday services, where she learned about the values and practices which form the heart of FUUSN’s belief system.  Feeling very much at home with them, she became a member in 2015.

Joan is Jewish, grew up in Philadelphia and moved to Newton in time for the blizzard of 78.  As a social worker in private practice she was a feminist therapist and a grief counselor.  She has also been an organizer, a chant leader, and the conductor of The Silver Newtones.

Currently retired, Joan is grateful to be a lay minister and deeply enjoys being a choir member.  She is an enthusiastic walker and reader and is happy to be making new friends.
