Join a Social Action Effort that Suits Your Soul


Are there causes that you care about? Are you looking for a way to put your UU beliefs into action? Do you want to connect with like-minded people? Do you have a project we should know about? Are you looking for information?

You are most welcome to come to the monthly meetings of the Social Action Committee-usually the first Sunday of the month after the service. You are equally welcome to participate in any of the activities listed here.

Direct Action Through Sharing

Social Action Lobby Day

Make a child, a homeless person, or a family starting a new life more comfortable.

  • Donations of in-season clothing for all ages, instant food, gently used toys, books and furniture are redistributed to many different organizations.
  • Dry food, such as spaghetti sauce, chips, cookies, juice, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, may be dropped off for Roxbury Youth Programs.
  • Donate household furniture for Second Step survivors of domestic violence moving into new apartments.
  • Supplementary nonperishable food items, such as canned goods, pasta, and peanut butter, can be dropped off at the Newton Food Pantry, 1294 Centre St., Newton Centre, Monday through Friday.

Direct Action Through Service

A few hours a month can make a big difference to people who are hungry, homeless, or in prison and to youth who need attention. Join a team from FUSN!

  • Newton Food Pantry needs drivers to deliver food to people.
  • Greater Boston Food Bank needs food sorters.
  • Boston Habitat for Humanity needs both skilled and unskilled help to construct and rehabilitate homes in Boston neighborhoods.
  • Stand High Stand United, a UU Urban Ministry program for youth in Roxbury needs mentors, chaperones, and tutors.
  • FUSN members participate in prison visiting opportunities and criminal justice advocacy.
  • Women needed to prepare and serve food at the Women's Lunch Place for homeless women in Back Bay.

Learning and Advocacy

The Social Action Committee co-sponsors many adult education programs and guest speakers related to current events, major world religions, and social justice issues.

  • 20/20 Vision meets monthly to write postcards to influence policy makers on issues related to world peace and the environment.
  • Coalition for a Strong United Nations meets monthly to discuss issues related to the UN mission regarding human rights, international law and preventing war.
  • Ethical Eating Study Group is FUSN's first initiative to participate in a denomination-wide process of study and action on a wide array of issues related to the food economy.  See the study group and UUA websites for more information, and join our meetings on the first Thursday of the month, September-June.
  • Project Zambia at FUSN connects people with, and promotes financial support for, children orphaned by AIDS, through a partnership with Communities Without Borders. Activities include cooperative planning with a partner community in Zambia, intergenerational service-learning trips, fundraising through an annual Sunday "Second Collection" and Youth Coffeehouse, a pen-pal project, and educational events.
  • UU Mass. Action Network unites 140 UU churches and 20,000 UU members in a collective moral voice in the state.
  • Peace News provides news about peace-related efforts in the area. Email notices to Holly Zeeb, hollyzeeb [at] rcn [dot] com, to be posted.
